Get Your Joy On!

If joy is a fruit of the Spirit, why are Christians looking so sour? Have you looked around church lately during a worship service? How many of them look joyful?  How many look tired, bored, or maybe irritated?  How about you?

A guest speaker came to our church in Castile, NY many years ago. He made a statement I'll never forget.  He said, "Even if I hadn't met your pastor, I'd know who he is. He's the one with the glory face."   He was right. Our pastor was a joyful man of God whose face reflected that fruit of the Spirit. No, he wasn't giddy or a laugh a minute. His joy was the real deal kind.

It's more than happiness. It's more than a smile. It's all rather illusive and hard to define sometimes. Emotions can be tricky business, and we sometimes tend to discount them. True joy is much more than emotion, but emotion is part of it. There's nothing wrong with joy actually showing up on your face, in your step, or your actions.

The Greek word for joy in the New Testament is chairo which means "to rejoice, be glad, be well, to thrive." Sounds healthy, doesn't it? Fruit is good for you.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Galatians 5:22 NIV

Here are some things I'm learning about joy.

Joy is strong.
"...for the joy of the LORD is your strength." Nehemiah 8:10  NIV
Joy isn't transitory--it will last forever.
The poor will eat and be satisfied. All who seek the LORD will praise him. Their hearts will rejoice with everlasting joy.  Psalm 22:26 NLT
Angels experience joy.
...as the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? Job 38:7 NLT

Joy shows up in unlikely places. It's not dependent on circumstances.
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.  James 1:2-3 NIV
God experiences joy.
But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him."  Matthew 17:5 NLT

God is joyful about me.
Now all glory to God, who is able to keep you from falling away and will bring you with great joy into his glorious presence without a single fault. Jude 1:24 NLT

I love that old gospel song that sings it out --"it is joy unspeakable and full of glory....oh the half has never yet been told." Don't waste another minute. Get your joy on and thrive!

"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!" Philippians 4:4 NIV

So very true. People in churches would be amazed at what their countenance says to others. I'm a people watcher, so I've sat back and watched how people in churches look. Not just sour, but they resemble kids who hate to be in school being forced to endure it. Also, at least in the last church hubby and I attended (in a new one now - with JOY), people looked like they didn't even like each other - they sat so far apart. Not how God wants us to feel about one another. LOVING the atmosphere in the new church that's not only NOT squashing our joy but feeding it. :)

Victim of Circumstances?

The article below has been getting a lot of hits lately, and I thought it may be time to repost it. A couple of weeks ago, I took the picture below. I thought it pretty much sums up our life journey. We never know what's around the corner for us.  Circumstances change in seconds some days. Whether the circumstances of life are good or bad, we're fond of blaming them for how we behave and think. Here are a few of the well-used excuses:  "I'm a victim of circumstances.""The situation is impossible." "The circumstances are beyond my control." "Under the circumstances"...fill in the blank. Funny how principles, self-control, and  positive thinking can go out the window when we're "under the circumstances."  And lest you think the author is above blaming circumstances, she is not. I've used most of the excuses above, whether spoken or unspoken.  An imprisoned and wrongly accused Jewish C...

The Castile Knapper

It's always fun to have family members who have a bit of notoriety because of interesting pursuits. My husband's cousin, Ken Wallace is one of those.  Ken is an artist who works in stone as a flintknapper. Flintknapping is the ancient art of shaping tools and weapons from pieces of stone. Knapping was part of the survival skill set of Native Americans. Arrowheads, knives, hatchets, and more were shaped from raw pieces of flint or chert.  Ken knapping at the Wallace Reunion Ken became interested in this process back in 1985. One of his favorite pastimes was searching fields for arrowheads, both of which are pretty plentiful in Western New York. Freshly plowed ground in rural areas often yields many different types of arrowheads since the Iroquois were the original residents of what are now corn fields and cow pastures. Fascinated with how the Iroquois made their weapons and tools, Ken started to try and recreate them. He says a lot of trial and error were involved in the...

Second Chances

Tonight, I'll be teaching a women's Bible study at our little church on the border. We're studying the book of Jonah. It's a familiar Sunday School Bible story, many of us have heard over the years. It's easy to focus on the "great fish" and there have been innumerable debates over the actual "great fish" that swallowed Jonah. However, the fish is a minor player in this book. The real focus of the four short chapters is the dialogue between God and Jonah. God begins the conversation with Jonah, who's a well known prophet in Israel. He tells him to go to Nineveh, a great city in Assyria and tell them that God's judgment is coming. Now the Assyrians were Israel's archenemies, despised and hated by any self-respecting Israelite. There was a reason for this. The Assyrians were unspeakably cruel and wicked. Israel had been captured, plundered, and massacred by these people. Judgment for the Assyrians was probably music to the prophet...
